2006 Blue & Gold Dinner
The Pack held its annual Blue & Gold dinner on Wednesday evening, February 8th, with more than 210
people attending to help celebrate the anniversary of Scouting. Special guests included our Principal, Susan Gilbert,
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles Wilson, Town Supervisor Joe Solimine, Town Councilman Pete DiPoalo Sr., and New York
State Senator Jeff Klein. Senator Klein presented the Pack with a citation that officially made the day "Pack 4 Pelham
Day" throughout New York State. Other special guests included Patrice Fitzpatrick, former Pack 4 Committee member and
current adult leader for Girls Scout Troop 1653, and Sue McCann-Brown, adult leader for Girls Scout Troop 1667.
One of the highlights of the dinner was the display of table centerpieces that each den made for the evening.
This year's centerpieces were spectacular and included a spaceship, a 6 foot tall totem pole, a paper mache wolf's head,
a race car, and a talking scout saying the Cub Scout Promise. We hope to be able to display these wonderful centerpieces
in the School soon.
2006 National Quality Unit Award
For a fourth consecutive year, Pelham Cub Scout Pack 4 was awarded the Boy Scouts of America's National
Quality Unit Award. This award is granted to Cub Scout Packs that achieve operational quality commitments in such areas
as Training, Leadership, Pack Meetings, Tiger Cub Program, Service Projects, Scout Advancement, Outdoor Activities and Membership.
As the largest Cub Scout unit in Pelham, Pack 4 continues to experience significant growth. There are 63 active scouts
enrolled for the current program year. Many thanks to the adult leaders, scout parents and of course, the scouts themselves
for helping to earn this nationally recognized award!
January Pack Meeting
"Let it Snow" was the theme to January's Pack meeting where the scouts made snow globes setting a Siwanoy School
replica and a Spaceman figure inside a glass jar with a glitter mix. The Spaceman was a reference to the recent Space
Derby the scouts held at last weekend's cabin camping trip where the scouts constructed and raced 24 Space Derby planes duing
the weekend. Later in the Pack meeting, the scouts were visited by members of the Pelham Manor Volunteer Fire Company
who performed a uniform inspection of all the scouts. The scouts will now look a little sharper for the annual Blue
& Gold dinner to be held on February 8th in the Pelham Memorial High School gym.
January Cabin Camping
During the weekend of January 7-8, 50 scouts, siblings and adults went to Clear Lake Scout Reservation in Putnam
Valley, NY for the Pack's third annual Winter Cabin Camping event. The scouts participated in a variety of outdoor (hikes,
making campfires/shelters) and indoor (Space Derby event, boardgames) activities while sleeping overnight in cabins heated
by wood burning stoves. And, of course, there were plenty of s'mores for dessert on Saturday night!
December Pack Meeting
"Faith, Hope and Charity" was the theme to Thursday night's December Pack meeting as the scouts brought toys
in support of the annual Toy Drive that the Pack is sponsoring with the Siwanoy Second Grade class. The scouts also
started the meeting by writing Faith and Hope messages on ribbons that were then taped to a snowman. Following that,
the scouts enjoyed some "gym made" ice cream and some holiday cookies baked by the adult leaders as part of another annual
Pack tradition.
November Pack Meeting
It was "My Family Tree" night at the November 3rd Pack meeting and the scouts marked the occasion by making
a colorful Pack Family tree with a leaf for each family member. Next, the Pack was visited by an extended scouting family
member, Bob Rice from the Westchester Putnam Council of Boy Scouts, who conducted the Bobcat Advancement ceremony
for the Pack's newest scouts. Congratulations to the following 15 scouts on achieving their first rank in scouting!:
Den 1 - Spencer, Miles, Parker, James, Ian, Hugo; Den 9 - Carter, Matthew, Whit, Nicholas, Matthew; Den 7 - Eli;
Den 2 - Austin; Den 4 - Luke. Jack from Den 9 was not present at the meeting and will receive his Bobcat Badge at the
December Pack meeting.

On November 5th, Pack 4 scouts will be dropping food donation bags off at neighborhood homes in support of
the Boy Scouts of America national Scouting For Food Drive. Bag recipients are requested to donate canned goods/non-perishable
food items in the bags and to leave the bags outside their doors for pick-up by the scouts on the following Saturday,
November 12th. All donations will be distributed by the scouts to the Community Action Group in Mount Vernon.
Popcorn Sales Results
The results are in, and Pack 4 has just concluded its most successful fundraising event ever! This year,
Scouts collected $8,062 in popcorn sales, including $175 in unsolicited donations. Pack 4 will receive 35% of all sales
proceeds. Over 50% of pack 4 scouts participated in selling. Top salesmen for the year are:

Leader Essentials: Steve Hall and Darren Johnson. Great work, leaders!
October Pack Meeting
It was "Monster Pack" night during the October 6th Pack meeting and the scouts were greeted by some creepy
fellows as they entered the meeting. It was a fun evening for the scouts as they decorated Halloween bags for Katrina
victims and participated in a Mummy making contest by wrapping adult volunteers in reams of toilet paper. The winning mummy
was Evan's mom Marie! The scouts were also visited by the Popcorn "Kernel" who kicked off Pack 4's annual Popcorn
fundraiser by motivating the scouts to help the Pack so the Pack can help others all year long.
New Scout Leaders Complete Training Course
Congratulations to the following new Den Leaders who recently completed a 2 evening training course in New
Scout Leader Essentials: Nancy Calvaruso, Lawrence Cooke, Pete Dipaola, Bardy Jones and Tom Spana. Great work, leaders!
Dedication Ceremony
On Saturday, September 24th, scouts Teddy C, Evan, Oliver, Ryan, and Jack represented Pack 4 among
other Pelham scouts at a bench dedication ceremony at Hutchinson School in honor of Lieutenant Joseph Leavey, a Pelham resident
and New York City Firefighter who died on 9/11. The moving ceremony was a reminder of how one person can contribute
so much to a community and make a difference in people's lives.
September Pack Meeting
The Pack held its first meeting of the new program year on Thursday night, September 15th with "Cub
Scout Roundup" as the theme for the meeting. Upon arriving, new and returning scouts made their own lassos (lariats) and
'rounded up' various adult leaders and parent volunteers who held parts of a message to be unscrambled. At the
end of the meeting, the message became clear when the lights were dimmed and the scouts were surprised to see that
the letters were painted in glow-in-the-dark paint! What was the message? Do More With Pack 4!
Prior to the meeting, 21 new scouts were enrolled in the program, including a record number of tiger Cubs
- 17! In addition to enrollment, returning scouts and leaders were recognized for their tenure in the Pack with Service
Stars.
Thanks again to the families who brought Hurricane Katrina donations to the meeting.
Scout Day at Shea Stadium
On Saturday, July 23rd, 35 Pack 4 scouts and family members saw the New York Mets beat the Los Angeles
Dodgers during the annual Scout Day event at Shea Stadium. As part of the event, the scouts joined hundreds of
other area scouts to line the warning track of the field as part of the opening flag ceremony.
Summer Beach Weekend Campout
The second annual summer campout was bigger and better than ever! During the July 9th weekend,
scouts and their families traveled to Greenport, Long Island to the summer house of the Ferrara family. The house is a grand
old historical site, which served as the Manor House for the locally famous Merkel Farms. The grounds are ample, and the view
of Shelter Island and Peconic Bay is really something.
Everyone enjoyed a full schedule, which included tubing, swimming, wiffleball, tag, frisbee, football,
a bar-be-que, bonfire, stories around the fire...whew! We also retired the flag which had flown at Siwanoy School for
the past 8 years in a simple but moving ceremony. Pack families pitched their tents on the large, wonderful
back lawn and enjoyed the best of two worlds - camping and the beach! many thanbks to the Ferrara family for their gracious
hospitality.
Pack Leaders Receive Recognition
On Monday, June 6th, Pack 4 leaders Tom Morrissey and John Felicetti received the Cub Scouter award at the
Algonquin District monthly Roundtable. The award, a "braid" patch which is worn on the uniform, signifies accomplishments
in the areas of Pack Program Planning, National Quality Award, Pack Service Projects and Pack Membership. Congratulations
to Tom and John!
Akela Games May Weekend Campout
The weekend of May 14th, 33 scouts, siblings and adults camped out at Clear Lake Scouting Reservation
in Putnam Valley, NY to participate in the annual Akela Games Camporee event. Activities included archery, ultimate
frisbee, an obstacle course, casting, campfire cooking, tug-o-war and more. After the games, Pack 4's Tiger Cubs were
recognized in a special ceremony at the Council campfire. The Pack built its own campfire too, and enjoyed
campfire cooking on Saturday night (including s'mores, of course) and Sunday breakfast. A brief overnight rain did nothing
to dampen the fun, as the group was very well prepared for all types of weather. Many thanks to all the adult leaders
who helped make this a memorable weekend!
May Pack Meeting & Cross-Over
"Thanks, Mom!" was the theme to Wednesday night's Pack meeting as the scouts started the meeting by planting
flowers in front of Siwanoy School - the Pack's "mother" - as well as a take home flower gift for their own Moms. The
main event of the meeting, however, was the advancement of the Tiger, Wolf, and Bear scouts to their next level of scouting
having completed the requirements for their current rank. As part of the ceremony, the boys "crossed-over" a transformed
(dry ice mist, special lighting effects) Siwanoy stage where they received a replacement neckerchief for their new rank
and recorded thier names into the Pack Advancement book, a tradition started last year.
Scout Day at Yankee Stadium
Go Yankees! On Sunday, May 1st, 75 scouts, siblings and parents went to see the New York Yankees play
the Toronto Blue Jays as part of the Yankees' Scout Day half-price ticket promotion. As part of the promotion, all scouts
and under 14 year old siblings received an Alex Rodriquez youth-sized replica bat. The early game clouds gave way to
a glorious afternoon of baseball. Unfortunately, the Yanks' pitching did not hold up as the Bombers dropped an 8-6 decision
to the Blue Jays. But, a good time was had by all.
April Pack Meeting - Webelos Cross Over
April 6th's Pack meeting was literally a "blast" as the scouts launched five rockets into the "final
frontier"- and even managed to get two of them back! But the special event of the evening was a crossing-over ceremony
for Osama and William who were recognized for completing the Cub Scout program. As a symbol of their graduation
from the Pack, both scouts were presented with a ceremonial pouch and an arrow marked with their scouting achievements.
Additionally, William was awarded the Arrow of Light badge, Cub Scouts' highest award, which he can now wear on his Boy Scout
uniform as he joins Pelham's Troop 1 for his next frontier in scouting.
Pinewood
Derby
What do 42 cars plus 60
races plus 72 awards equal? Pack 4’s annual Pinewood Derby, of course! That’s right – on Saturday March
12, 42 scouts entered their cars in a great day of friendly competition.
This was the largest Pinewood Derby in recent Pack 4 history, and this year’s race featured the unveiling of
the Pack’s brand new aluminum track with electronic finish line. Adding
to the day’s enjoyment was the use of a “challenge” track which scouts and siblings could use for racing
throughout the day. Many thanks to the Ferrara
family for their donation of the challenge track.
Every scout received a
2005 Pinewood Derby participation patch. In addition, the following scouts received
special recognition:

'Spring Time is Fitness Time' was the theme for our March 9th Pack meeting. The evening started
off with the scouts doing some stretching and callisthenic exercises led by Personal Trainer, Colleen O'Connor. Later,
Dennis Campo from Wisdom Way Martial Arts talked to the scouts about karate as a fitness activity followed by a kicking demonstration
performed by one of his students.
2005 Blue and Gold Dinner
On Wednesday evening, February 9th, over 130 scouts, siblings and parents attended the annual Pack 4 Blue &
Gold dinner held at the Daronco Town House. This year's dinner celebrated Cub Scout's 75th anniversary and several special
guests joined the scouts to celebrate the occasion including Town Supervisor Joe Solimine, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles
Wilson and our very own School Principal, Susan Gilbert. During the dinner meeting, the scouts made leather key chains
and showcased their den tabletop centerpieces with the Tiger Den's 'Cub Scout of the Future' winning this year's best model.
Other special guests during the evening included 2 former Pack 4 Cubmasters, Mr. David Treacy, whose seven sons were all scouts,
and Mrs. Chris Cowan, who explained that she and other mothers were the Pack leaders at the time since few men were
involved in Pack 4. Special thanks to Mr. Sandy Baccellieri (uncle of Alexandra and Andrew) from Pelham
Gourmet Express who provided the delicious food for the evening!
2005 National Quality Unit Award
For a third consecutive year, Pelham Cub Scout Pack 4 was awarded the Cub Scout Pack National Quality Unit Award.
This award is granted to Cub Scout Packs that achieve operational quality commitments in such areas as Training, Leadership,
Pack Meetings, Tiger Cub Program, Service Projects, Scout Advancement, Outdoor Activities and Membership. Many thanks
to the adult leaders, scout parents and of course, the scouts themselves for helping to earn this nationally recognized award!
January Cabin Camping
During the weekend of January 22nd, 39 intrepid scouts, parents and siblings were encamped at the Clear Lake Scout Reservation
in Pelham Pack 4's second annual winter cabin camping event. In spite of a significant winter storm that deposited up
to a foot of snow, a full day's planned activities were carried out. Upon arrival, scouts and parents worked to build
model rockets (which will be launched in a separate Pack event later in the year). After lunch, the scouts went sledding
before returning to base camp for a number of activity stations.
Tiger Cubs learned foil cookery by preparing "pigs in a blanket" for the rest of the Pack. Meanwhile, Wolf and
Bear scouts learned the proper way of building a campfire. The Webelos scouts practiced emergency shelter setup under
adverse conditions, and also practiced tent set up (indoors). Following the activity stations, the group gathered outdoors
for a flag retirement ceremony. The evening was filled with game playing, dinner, and one last foray into the outdoors for
s"mores construction.
Sunday's activities included building snow forts and more sledding before the group packed up and returned home.
Special thanks to Assistant Ranger Keith for keeping the camp road plowed!
January Pack Meeting
'Cub Scouts Spread the News' was the theme for the Pack meeting
held on Wednesday, January 12th. The meeting featured Maggie Klein, editor and publisher of The Pelham Weekly, as a special
guest. Maggie brought copies of the Pelham Weekly for all the scouts and talked to them about how she puts
the paper together. During the meeting the scouts also participated in a newspaper folding and toss contest as well
as a newspaper relay race. The scouts also received their Pinewood Derby car kits and will have 2 months to get their
cars ready for the Pack's Pinewood Derby race on March 12th.
Adult leaders complete training course
Congratulations to adult leaders Joakim Harlin and Richard Pine for completing
the "New Leader Essentials" training course on December 20, 2004. The NLE is a 2 session workshop and it involves presentation
of District and Pack materials combined with discussions of "real world" situations and brainstorming of ideas to ensure a
quality den program. Thank you to Joakim and Richard for becoming trained!
Bronx Zoo Lights
On Saturday evening, December 18th, a dozen scouts and family members viewed the Bronx Zoo lights in what is rapidly
becoming a Pack 4 tradition. This year over 500,000 lights illuminated a variety of animal shapes and decorations.
This year, the zoo added animated, lighted dinosaurs! Add in the monkey house, petting zoo, lots of hot chocolate and
funnel cakes, and you have the recipe for one enchanted evening. Special thanks to Holly Mellstrom for coordinating
the event!
Annual Toy Drive
On Monday December 13th, the Pack delivered to Head Start in Mount Vernon well
over 100 toys contributed by the scouts and Siwanoy Families. We would like to thank everyone who supported
this year's successful Toy Drive, particularly the Siwanoy Second Grade Class who co-sponsored the drive with the Pack.
Happy Holidays to all!
December Pack Meeting
'Its a Wonderful (Scouting) Life' was the theme for the monthly Pack meeting,
which was held on December 8th. The meeting was filled with activities celebrating the holiday spirit.
First, the scouts brought toy donations to the meeting in support of the Toy drive for Head Start families. Then, they were
treated to a visit from special guest Bill Taubner Jr. (a former scout himself) who gave every scout a personalized dog
tag chain made from Ball Chain Manufacturing in Mt. Vernon. The Pack then watched Den 4 scouts construct
an emergency shelter in less than 2 minutes and, later, the den performed a skit from the Siwanoy stage. Following a
'marshmallow tug-of-war' contest and recognition for good deeds and Webelo scout achievments, the scouts left the meeting
with holiday cookies baked by the adult leaders - a Pack 4 holiday tradition.
Adult leaders complete training course
Congratulations to adult leaders Mike Gutch and Laird Tolan for completing the
"New Leader Essentials" training course on December 6, 2004. The NLE is a 2 session workshop and it involves presentation

quality den program. Thank you to Mike and Laird for becoming trained!
Pack 4 attends 12th Annual Thunderbird Games
The weather cooperated for the 23 scouts and parents who attended the fall overnight camping event - the Thunderbird
Games - at Croton Point Park on the weekend of October 16th. On Saturday afternoon over 2,500 scouts from the tri-state
area participated in various activity stations, including Obstacle Courses, 3 Legged Race, Bow and Arrow, Sack Race, Catapult
Battles, Rope Bridge, Tug-of-War, and other traditional scouting activities. In addition, several Pack 4 scouts
practiced their knot tying and tent pitching skills as they helped the adult leaders set up camp. And the food was good,
with an amazing menu selection! Our hungry campers dined on hot dogs, hamburgers, beef stew and peach cobbler prepared
in dutch ovens, biscuits, lentil soup, salad and (of course!) s'mores made over an open fire. The breakfast
menu included eggs, french toast, sausage, fruit salad, juice and cereal. Four scouts earned an "Overnighter" patch
for participating in their first overnight camping experience with the Pack: Nicholas, Jack, Ian and Hugo. A great time was
had by all!
Pack 4 Stocks Food Pantry
On Tuesday, October 12th after school, scouts Evan, Hugo, Ryan, Jack, Matthew V, and David delivered over
190 bags of food collected from the Scouting for Food drive to the Community Action Group in Mount Vernon. Not
only did the scouts deliver the food, they also helped sort and stock the food items in the food pantry. The scouts
saw first-hand that people just 10 minutes away are very grateful for food donations.
October Pack Meeting
The scouts had a very busy and fun-filled Pack meeting at the October Pack meeting, held on October 6th.
After thanking Joe Solimine for a generous donation to the Pack on behalf of Meridian Risk Management, the scouts buried
their Pack 4 time capsule that they created in September. Next, the Pack's new scouts who achieved their Bobcat rank received
their badges in an advancement ceremony while Michael B and Bobby were recognized for Good Deeds they performed. All
scouts who participated in the Scouting for Food drive also received recognition patches and the scouts will deliver the 180
bags (and counting) of food they collected to the Community Action Group in Mount Vernon after school on Tuesday, October
12th.
The Pack also kicked off its annual Popcorn fundraiser to raise money for scout outings and program materials.
The scouts will go door-to-door (with an adult) to sell popcorn during the month of October and all orders will be delivered
in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Thank you in advance for your support!
September Pack Meeting
Pack
4 held its first Pack meeting of the new school year on Wednesday evening, September 15th, and the line was out
the door as a total of 51 boys are now in the Pack! During the meeting (which was also an Open House for prospective
scouts and their parents), the scouts made individual contributions to a Pack 4 time capsule that will be buried during the
October Pack meeting.

Family Beach Campout in Greenport, NY
On August 14-15th, 29 family members from Pack 4 travelled to Greenport, NY where the Ferrara family hosted
the Pack for a day of beach fun and overnight camping. The scouts and their families enjoyed tubing, kayaking, and a
barbecue dinner and bonfire on the beach before retreating to their tents for the evening.
Scout Day at Shea Stadium
On Sunday,
July 25th, Pack 4 Cub Scouts and family members participated with over 400 area scouts, leaders and their
families at the annual Scout Day at Shea Stadium. Scouts Henry, Evan, Michael
C., Matthew C., John , Ryan and Matthew V (along with Pack Committee Member John Settineri, Sr. and Tony Camardella,
Webelos Den Leaders Lucien Cardinal and John Felicetti and Cubmaster Tom Morrissey) participated in on-field ceremonies at
the start of the game! Troop 79 from New City, New York provided the Honor Guard
for the posting of the colors prior to the game between the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves. Pack 4, along with over 200 scouts and leaders from 20
other units flanked the colors on the outfield warning track.
Afterwards,
everyone enjoyed the ball game. It was an exciting game, with several lead
changes occurring before the Mets eventually fell to the Braves by the score of 4 - 3. In spite of the outcome, everyone
had a great time! See our pictures in the Photo Gallery.
Akela
Games Camping Weekend
During
the weekend of May 15th, a total of 24 scouts, siblings and parents camped out at the annual Algonquin District Akela Games.
The weekend was held at the Clear Lake scout Reservation in Putnam Valley, NY.
Participants were treated to a variety of skill and craft stations, including an obstacle course (designed and run by leaders
from Pack 4!), outdoor cooking, rope tying, leather punching, fishing and casting, soap carving and crafts.
After
the stations, each unit returned to its campsite for dinner. Pack 4 enjoyed the usual grill fare - hots dogs, cheeseburgers
and roasted corn, and also beef stew and peach cobbler prepared in Dutch ovens right in the campfire! After dinner,
Pack 4 gathered at the District campfire, where the scouts were treated to a petting zoo of exotic animals, and in a special
ceremony, graduating Tiger Cubs "crossed over" in front of a roaring campfire!
Returning
to camp after the ceremonies, the scouts made smores, and talked and laughed around the campfire. The next morning,
hungery campers were treated to pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage and cereal. All in all, this was a very successful event,
with a terrific turnout.
Scouts
who attended the weekend were Joey, Bobby, Evan, JoJo, Angelo, Alex, Ryan, Max and David. In addition, Pack 4 was joined
by Paul M and his sons from Pack 1, Pelham. Thanks to all the adult volunteers who helped make the weekend a success!
Siwanoy Trail Cleanup
On Monday, May 10th, Pack 4 Cub Scouts and parents
worked diligently cleaning up the "Siwanoy Trail", the small woodland park behind Siwanoy School. As part of Pelham's
350th anniversary, Pack 4 is leading an effort with the Junior League of Pelham to improve the park. Scouts and other
community volunteers have already started the cleanup effort. Still to come is new fencing and lighting, and lots of
new plantings for the site. Thanks to Osama, Evan, John, Bobby, Joey, Ryan, David, Hugh, Teddy M and Michael C (and
parents!) for helping out.
April Pack Meeting
In honor of the upcoming Summer Olympics to be held in
Athens, Greece this summer, Pack 4 held its own "Cub Olympics" last night at the April Pack Meeting. Contestants made
and wore their own "togas" and participated in a variety of events, including a football throw, stilt-walking, basketball
free throw, catapult challenge, batting cage and a "bazooka blast". The event included the lighting of the ceremonial
"Olympic campfire".
During
the recognition portion of the meeting, Millan was awarded a "Good Turn" badge for finding a returning a classmate's lost
money, and Michael C. was awarded his "Whittlin Chip" badge for pocketknife safety training and the "Leave No Trace" award
for outdoor ethics awareness training. Finally, Webelos Scouts Osama and Andrew received participation patches for the
Webelos Winter Challenge event held earlier in the year.
Pinewood Derby
On Saturday afternoon, March 27th, Pack 4 held our
annual Pinewood Derby. Once again this year we were able to run 2 tracks: the official "Race day" track and a "Challenge"
track for use by siblings and Scouts who did not qualify for the finals. Pack
4 thanks Cub Scout units in Bronxville and Larchmont for the use of the tracks.
It was a great afternoon of racing as 35 cars competed

Cleanup
at Bartow-Pell
On Saturday,
March 20th, Bear Scouts Michael, Bobby, David and Tiger Cub Max participated in a Pelham-wide cleanup of the Bartow-Pell Mansion
grounds, in preparation of the re-enactment of the Oak Tree treaty signing marking the 350th anniversary of the purchase of
an extensive tract of land (including the Pelhams) from the local Native American tribe, the Siwanoy Indians. The
re-enactment will be held in June, and the community pitched in to help clear brush, trim vines and generally spruce up the
grounds. The scouts worked very hard for 2 hours, and everyone seemed to enjoy the work! Thanks to our
scouts who participated!
March
Pack Meeting
What
a night! Wednesday's Pack meeting was just filled with special events. Senior Webelos Scouts Steven K and Michael
B graduated from the Cub Scout program, crossing over to become Boy Scouts in a special ceremony with Akela John Gomez and
Troop 1 Scoutmaster Ralph Mirra. Steven and Michael also earned their Arrow of Light awards, the highest award that
can be earned in Cub Scouts. We congratulate them on their achievement, and wish them well in Troop 1.
During
the meeting, Pack 4 welcomed its newest member, Tiger Cub Henry and his parents Kevin and Lisa. Scout Steven K welcomed
Henry into Pack 4 to a thunderous round of applause!
Also
during the meeting, Bear Scout Matthew C was recognized for raising $600 in the annual Bowl-O-Ree fundraiser to support programs
for disabled scouts. Well done, Matthew! The Pack overall raised over $1,600 for this worthy cause. Scouts James
and Ryan were recognized for posting the top single game score in the Bowl-O-Ree, and James, Neil and Michael B were recognized
for posting the top three series scores.
And finally,
the following scouts were recognized for performing Good Turns during the month: Teddy C, Brian, Ryan, Teddy M, Hugh and Evan.
Blue and Gold Dinner
On Tuesday evening, February 24th, over 70 Scouts,
parents and siblings met at the Villa Nova East restaurant for Pack 4"s annual Blue and Gold Dinner. This year"s dinner
was a combined birthday party, celebrating the 94th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America, the 74th
birthday of the Cub Scouts, and the 55th birthday of Pack 4! Each
den made a special party centerpiece for their tables. Adding to the fun was
senior Scout Steven K serenading the partygoers with a keyboard rendition of Happy Birthday!
Joining us at the festivities were Dr. Charles Wilson,
Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Kevin Kerrigan, Algonquin District Executive, Mr. Ralph Mirra, Scoutmaster of Troop 1
and Mr. Val Taubner, member of the Pelham Manor Board of Trustees. Letters of
congratulation from Governor George Pataki and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg were read at the dinner. For the second
year in a row, Pack 4 earned the National Quality Award for program excellence, and during the dinner, the 2004 Quality patches
and 55-year veteran unit patches were distributed to all scouts.
Pack 4 is grateful to Anthony Bevilacqua, the owner of
the Villa Nova restaurant for generously donating much of the cost of the evening.
Webelos
Winter Challenge
On Saturday,
February 7th, four members of Pack 4's Webelos Den (Steven, William, Osama and Andrew, along with approximately 80 other senior
scouts, participated in the Webelos Winter Challenge, held at the Durland Scout Center in Rye. The Scouts participated
in a total of 10 skill stations, including: Tents and Shelters, Outdoor Cooking, Flag Etiquette, Knots and Firecraft.
At the conclusion of the Challenge, members of Pelham's American Legion Post 50 were on hand and led a flag retirement ceremony.
Many thanks to Webelos Den Leader Glenn Koniuk, Mike Silvester and Cubmaster John Felicetti for organizing and running the
Tent and Shelter station.
February Pack Meeting
There was a bit of Old Mexico in Pelham last Wednesday evening at Pack 4's monthly Pack meeting. The theme
for the Pack meeting was "Fiesta!", and the Scouts enjoyed such activities as a Sombrero Toss and Tortilla Relay Race,
accompanied by mariachi music, of course! The highlight of our "South of the Border" activities was the breaking of
the Den pinatas, and the following scramble for the hidden goodies.
Our Webelos Scouts are nearing the end of their Cub Scouting career, and were awarded several achievement pins and emblems
at the meeting: Michael and Steven : Citizen; Michael, Steven and William: Outdoorsman; Michael and Steven: Compass Emblem;
Michael, Steven, Osama, William and Andrew: Craftsman.
For their Craftsman project, the Webelos Scouts designed and built a very impressive "Rope Knot Board" which they presented
to the Pack. The Board is an instructional device which will be used by many Scouts in the future, and was well-received
by the group. All in all, the Pack Meeting was deemed to be quite an exciting party!
2004 National Quality Unit Award
For a second consecutive year, Pelham Manor Cub Scout Pack 4 was awarded the Cub Scout Pack National
Quality Unit Award. This award is granted to Cub Scout Packs that achieve operational quality commitments in such areas
as Training, Leadership, Pack Meetings, Tiger Cub Program, Service Projects, Scout Advancement, Outdoor Activities and Membership.
Many thanks to the adult leaders, scout parents and of course, the scouts themselves for helping to earn this nationally recognized
award!
Cabin Camping at Clear Lake
During the weekend of January 10th - 11th, 39 intrepid scouts and family members camped out at the
Clear Lake Scout Reservation. The scouts made their headquarters in the 40-bunk "Oak" cabin, and spent the cold but
exhilerating weekend having lots of fun. Scouts and their families constructed and used catapults, learned how to build
several types of campfires, did foil cookery and went hiking! The evening was spent playing board games, sitting around
the wood-burning stove and generally having a good time. Six scouts (Matt B., Will B., Max, Jamey, Alex and Matthew
V.) were first time overnight campers, and will receive a special participation patch at February's Pack Meeting. Thanks
to all the adult leaders who helped plan the weekend, especially Beth Yelsey and Maria Bitetto, who headed up the Food sub-committee,
and Tom Morrissey and John Felicetti, who headed up the Activities sub-committee.
January Pack Meeting
The theme for last Wednesday's monthly Pack Meeting was "Safety at Home". Pack 4's special guests for the meeting
were EMS-trained specialists Jason, Kyle and Justin. Our guests spoke about how to stay safe
at home and what to do in the case of an emergency. Afterwards, they helped at 4 "Safety Stations" that were set up
in the gym:
1. Making First Aid Kits
2. Telephone Safety
3. Safety With Electricity
4. How to Make an Emergency Stretcher
All scouts visited each station and had a "hands on experience" at each.
Also during the meeting, Pack 4 welcomed its newest Tiger Cub Jamey, and US Heritage medals were awarded to Steven and
William . The evening ended with the introduction of Pack 4's ceremonial "campfire". At a pre-arranged signal, Campfire
Akela Morrissey released a circle of light which travelled overhead and descended on the Campfire set up on stage. It
was a great effect, and all scouts enjoyed the "special effects". What a great way to "light up" the New Year!
2004 Inaugural Ceremony
In 2004, Pelham celebrates the 350th year anniversary of the purchasing of the land which became Pelham from the Siwanoy
Indians. Special events are planned for the entire year, beginning with a Town Hall ceremony on New Year's Day for the
swearing in of Pelham's elected officials. Pelham's American Legion Post 50 presented the Colors in the opening ceremony.
Scouts Ryan and Bobby (along with siblings Maria and James) also participated in the recitation of the Pledge of Alligiance.
Please see our Photo Gallery for some pictures!
Popcorn Results are in!
Pack 4 placed among the top units in the Westchester-Putnam Council's recent Popcorn fundraiser. We placed 12th
overall in the Council, with sales of over $3,200. Pack 4 earns a 35% commission on all sales, and these funds will
be used to support our program activities during the year. Congratulations to everyone involved for making this year's
fundraiser a success, with special thanks to our Popcorn Fundraising leader, "Kernel" Tom Morrissey!

baked by the adult leaders. What a delicious way to ring in the holiday season!
Visit to Muscoot Farm
On Saturday, November 15th, 7 Scouts from Pack 4 (Matthew A, Neil, Max, Evan, John, Osama and Mike B) went on a day trip
to Muscoot Farm, a New York State Park and former working dairy farm, in Somers, New York. The farm has plenty of livestock,
an ice house and a blacksmith shop, as well as many interesting exhibits. The scouts learned about dairy farming, and
had a really good time seeing what living on a farm was like. The day ended with delicious hot chocolate and donuts
for all, graciously provided by the Bates family.
November Pack Meeting
On Wednesday, November 5th, 5 scouts from Den 2 (Teddy C., Brian, Ryan P., Hugh and Ted M.) were awarded their Bobcat
badges at the November Pack Meeting. Bobcat is the first rank along the Cub Scout trail, and all scouts, regardless
of age, must achieve this rank before moving on. Also during the meeting, scouts participated in a sing-along, led by guest
Dan DeNegris. Dan is a former Cubmaster of Pack 1 in Pelham, and we welcomed his visit. Results of our annual
Popcorn Fundraiser were announced by "Kernal" Tom Morrissey. Kernal Morrissey reported that Pack 4 more than doubled
last year's sales! Scout Eric W. led all Scouts in sales for this year's event - congratulations to Eric! And
finally, senior Webelos Scout Steven K. was recognized for earning his Knife Safety certification from the Boy Scouts of America
at a recent joint Cub Scout - Boy Scout outdoor event.

in the 11 year history of the Games! On Saturday afternoon over 2,000 scouts from the tri-state area participated in
25 activity stations, including Obstacle Courses, 3 Legged Race, Bow and Arrow, Rope Bridge, Tug-of-War, Jamboree On The Air and
other traditional scouting activities. Pack 4's attendees dined on homemade quesadillas, chili and corn roasted over
an open fire. Eight scouts earned an "Overnighter" patch for participating in their first (chilly) overnight camping
